Andar Bahar Strategy
- Place Your Regular Bet on the Side Where the First Card Will Be Placed. This first strategy helps you.
- Standard Andar Bahar rules have you place the first draw card on the Andar side. But another option is to use the joker’s color to decide which side to start with. If the Joker is black, the first card is Andar. If the Joker is red, the first card is Bahar.

The game of Andar Bahar depicts the street culture of India like no other card-based game does. Born under the streetlights of Bangalore, Karnataka, this game has gained traction like no other and learning the Andar Bahar strategy can surely equip you with the winning advantage.
Andar bahar may seem simple and at the mercy of luck but if you are aware of the strategy and the math behind the simplicity you can win more often.
You can take a few actions to protect your bankroll and ensure that you lose as few times as possible. Before I list the strategies, let’s have a quick overview of the game.
The Ropes of Andar Bahar Card Game
Andar Bahar is usually a guessing game played with winning chances of 50%. It is dealt between 2 players, where:
- The dealer handles the cards
- The players either call Andar or Bahar
Note: The more you hit, the more money you win.
To begin the game, the dealer places the deck of cards facing downward, cuts the deck in half, and places one half of it showing upward.
The players then guess if the subsequent value of the cards is either Andar (inside) or Bahar (outside) from the remaining half a deck of cards. The guessing game carries on until a card of the same value lands either on Andar or Bahar.
The player who guesses the correct side the card lands on wins the game and also bags twice the winning bet amount placed by the opposing player.
The gripe is that if the player gets it wrong, he/she not only loses the game but also the money he/she has bet. Cards are reshuffled after playing a few rounds to minimise the chances of repetition.
One last rule is that if the first card is drawn from the black suit the game must begin from Andar and if the card is drawn from the red suit, it begins from Bahar.
Hope the provided explanation suffices to learn the ropes of Andar Bahar and even though the game seems simple, the cards dealt are always from a classic 52 deck so investing time in learning the Andar Bahar game strategy definitely pays off.
Andar Bahar Strategy: Tips & Tricks for Winning
A simple google search for the term Andar Bahar strategy will fetch you numerous sites, companies, and individuals claiming to impart certain winning tricks but in reality, none of these work.
Some entities even sell nefarious tools and gadgets that could put players in serious legal trouble. So I sincerely request everyone to steer clear of such frauds.
On the other hand, there are tried & tested andar bahar strategies, which are purely based on math, statistics, and simply memorising the dealt cards that can increase your chances of winning, especially when you play Andar Bahar online.
I have outlined them clearly here:
An infamous betting strategy that can be applied for various card-based bettings, Martingale is the negative progression method where you place double the bet amount right after each loss, strategizing that an upcoming card that lands on either Andar or Bahar will win big.
Here’s the mathematical analysis of how Martingale betting system works:
Let one game round be a sequence of continuous losses, which are followed either by bankruptcy or wins. Now, after a win, you can “reset” and begin a new game round. You can then partition a consecutive series of martingale bets into independent rounds.
Here is the expected value of a game round.
- Let ‘x q’ be the probability or possibility of losing
- Let ‘y b’ be your initial bet amount
- Let ‘n’ be the limited no. of bets you can afford to lose
Andar Bahar Winning Strategy
Mathematically, the possibility that you will lose all the ‘n’ bets is ‘xn.’
When you lose all the bets, the total loss will be:
n
∑ y. 2i-1 = y(2n – 1)
i=1
The possibility that you will not lose all the n bets is (1 − xn). But in other cases, you win the initial bet (y).
Therefore, the expected profits per game round will be:
(1-xn) . (y – xn) . y(2n – 1) = y(1 – (2x)n)
Whenever x > 1/2, then the expression is 1 – (2x)n < 0 for all bets, n > 0. Hence, you are more likely to lose in all games in any given bets on average.
Increasing the wager size for every round will only increase your average loss.
For instance, when you call Andar a few times and the card lands on Bahar, you’re supposed to call Andar again and the chances of hitting the 4th or the 5th time are higher than the first 3.
You’d be shocked to know that there are documented incidences where investors have applied the Martingale method while predicting market variations and have invested millions of dollars. Needless to say, this is an effective strategy.
Used often while playing Roulette and Baccarat, the 1-3-2-4 gambling strategy was devised in the year 2006 by the Fortune Palace.
This strategy may work brilliantly for Andar Bahar because it is devised for gambling games that have 50/50 chances of winning & losing.
In this strategy, players can assign 1 for Andar, 3 for Bahar, 2 for Andar, and 4 for Bahar, and place as many bets as the said number suggests.
For instance, place your 1st bet on Andar, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th on Bahar, 5th & 6th on Andar, and so on. I hope you get the gist.
The objective of this andar bahar strategy is to introduce a level of control with the numbers to a game that is as unpredictable as flipping a coin.
If this technique works for you, restart betting from the 5th round with 1 again and continue with 3-2 & 4. As the strategies applied to Andar Bahar are few & far between in India, this technique needs to be tested for efficiency so conduct this as an experiment and improvise cautiously.
One of the most controversial betting strategies, D’Alembert method is all about placing the bet on the opposite side of the winner.
For example, if the first game goes to Andar, place your bet on Bahar irrespective of the result of the first game, even if you have won.
Using this method in other card-based games has often resulted in players winning marginally more than their betting amount so the idea here is to go home without a loss.
You may take this in a different direction and bet opposite to the losing game as well, i.e, betting on the winning side.
Of course, this technique invented by a French mathematician has various other caveats and nuances while playing other card-based gambling games but for a game like Andar Bahar, it won’t get simpler than this.
I call this the mindless strategy because you start the game with one agenda which is to consistently place bets on either Andar or Bahar regardless of which one wins.
You may mix it up eventually with the option you hadn’t chosen earlier but I suggest that the bets be placed on either Andar or Bahar for not more than 4 games straight.
Having said that, if you have started playing with this strategy, try not to mix it up too much as it may get you mentally unsettled.
Guessing how many cards will be dealt prior to a match isn’t that straightforward. Perhaps, it could be the first card or the 21st! You never know.
But there are certain things to keep in mind:
- There are always 3 match cards possible in the deck of 51 cards.
- Whenever a new card is being dealt, the possibility of hitting on a duplicate card increases. This means that the more the cards, higher are the chances of it being a match.
Let me ask you a quick question: when do you bet? Is it in the beginning of the game, middle, or in long ranges?
To be honest, I have the habit of betting in the mid range because it gives me a better return. Usually, bets placed on 11 to 15 will return in the ratio 5.5:1 whereas 16 to 25 will return 4.5 and 26 to 30 gives you 15:1.
Once you are comfortable & accustomed to playing Andar Bahar & placing bets, try combining all the above-mentioned strategies sequentially.
Try this to zero in on the strategy that suits you well and unlearn the strategy that tends to burn you. Combine not more than two strategies at once as you lose concentration during the process and once you’re well-versed, you may combine more than three strategies.
Conclusion
Although all the above-mentioned strategies can be applied to Andar Bahar, the outcome is as unpredictable as applying these to any other card-based game. Be it poker, blackjack or baccarat, these strategies do not make you lucky so apply these with strict caution.
The general rules of thumb before playing Andar Bahar are to study & observe the game beforehand, read the room, and always come with a budget.
Budgeting and gambling may seem like oxymorons but history stands testament for the sheer number of people who have lost lives & livelihoods to gambling so budgeting is crucial.

- The house edge is as low as 2.15%.

What About Katti?
Katti is another popular game in India with gameplay like Andar Bahar. This is probably why so many people think they’re the same game and use the two names interchangeably.
Katti is like Andar Bahar, but it’s also different. So different, in fact, that it’s best to think of Katti as a variation of Andar Bahar. A variation most people play at home than at the casino.
We’re going to explain how to play Katti and show you the differences between it and Andar Bahar later.
In this section, we’re going to explain the Andar Bahar game rules. But let’s start with some basic terminology, because games are always easier to understand when you know the proper terms.
Here are the most important Andar Bahar terms you need to know.
- Joker – This is the first card dealt, also known as a trump, house, or middle card. This is the card your side needs to match to win.
- Andar – This means “inside” in Hindi. It is the first side to receive a (draw) card.
- Bahar – This means “outside” in Hindi. This is the second side to receive a (draw) card.
- Range – The number of cards drawn before the card that matches the joker card is dealt.
Now, what’s the objective of Andar Bahar? What’s the goal?
The objective of Andar Bahar is simple. Your goal is to guess which side, Andar or Bahar, will receive the card that matches the joker card first.
Here’s a quick example to show you just how simple the game Andar Bahar is.
- The dealer draws a 10 of hearts. This is the “joker” or “middle card”. It’s placed between the Andar and Bahar spots on the table.
- You place your bet (on Andar or Bahar).
- The dealer draws the first card and places it on the Andar side.
- If the card is anything other than a 10, then the dealer draws a second card and places it on the Bahar side.
- If that card is anything other than a 10, the dealer will draw another card for the Andar side.
The game will continue like this until the dealer draws a card with the same rank or value as the joker card – in this case, a 10 of diamonds, spades, or clubs. The suit doesn’t matter.
Using our 10 of hearts example, here’s how to win playing Andar Bahar.
- If you placed your bet on the Andar spot and the next 10 in the deck appears on Andar, you win. If it appears on Bahar, you lose.
- If you placed your bet on the Bahar spot and the next 10 in the deck appears on Bahar, you win. If it appears on Andar, you lose.
That’s all there is to knowing how to play Andar Bahar. You choose Andar or Bahar and hope the first card that matches the joker ends up where you guessed it will.
Here are the probabilities and payouts for Andar Bahar.
- Andar payout = 0.9 to 1
- Andar winning probability = 51.50%
- Bahar winning payout = 1 to 1
- Bahar winning probability = 48.50%
The Andar payout is lower because its probability of winning is higher. And its probability of winning is higher because it’s the first side to receive a card.
Standard Andar Bahar rules have you place the first draw card on the Andar side.
But another option is to use the joker’s color to decide which side to start with.
- If the Joker is black, the first card is Andar.
- If the Joker is red, the first card is Bahar.
You won’t see this Andar Bahar variant or rule in online casinos. It’s more common in friendly home games.
Now that know the rules for how to play Andar Bahar, it’s time to shake things up with some side bets. These can add a lot of excitement as the payouts can be as high as 120:1.
Here are the most common Andar Bahar side bets.
Let’s look at how each side bet works.
Joker Prediction
For the Joker Prediction side bet, you’re looking only at the joker card that gets drawn.
Here are the different outcomes you can bet on and the probabilities and payouts for each.
Joker Prediction | Chance of Success | Payout Odds |
Value of 2 to 7 | 46.15% | 1:1 |
8 | 7.69% | 11:1 |
Value of 9 to Ace high | 46.15% | 1:1 |
Red or Black | 50% | 0.9:1 |
Suit – Heart, Diamond, Spade, or Club | 25% | 2.8:1 |
One thing that makes the Joker Prediction side bet unique is that this bet is settled before you place your bet for the main game.
The Bet on the Range side bet focuses on the number of cards drawn between the joker and the matching card.
Number of Cards Dealt – aka Range Prediction | Chance of Success | Payout |
1 to 5 | 23.8% | 3:1 |
6 to 10 | 21.7% | 4:1 |
11 to 15 | 16.9% | 5:1 |
16 to 25 | 21.8% | 4:1 |
26 to 30 | 6.09% | 15:1 |
31 to 35 | 3.69% | 25:1 |
36 to 40 | 1.89% | 50:1 |
41+ | 0.79% | 120:1 |
A successful 41+ range prediction pays 120:1, which is high for any casino table game.
The third most common Andar Bahar side bet is more like a betting variation.
The Mid-Game Wager allows players to make a second bet after the joker and the first Andar and Bahar cards are on the table.
This side bet or variation is one of the few ways you can improve your chances of winning when playing Andar Bahar. We’ll look at a few more in the next section.
While we’d love to help you crush this game with some amazing Andar Bahar strategies, the truth is that we can’t.
Andar Bahar is a game of pure chance. There’s nothing you can do to change the outcome of a hand.
That said, we do have a couple of tips for Andar Bahar that you can use to increase your overall chances of winning.
Get the Lowest House Edge by Betting on Andar
The best bet is on Andar because it has a slightly lower house edge. Since the first draw card is always for Andar, it can win without Bahar ever getting a card.
This slight advantage does come with a smaller payout, though.
Even despite that, the house edge is still 33% lower compared to betting on Bahar.
We generally don’t recommend you place side bets on casino games. They usually increase the house edge – sometimes significantly.
But if you are going to make a side bet playing Andar Bahar, these are the ones you should make.
Andar Bahar Game Strategy
- Color bet – 50-50 chance – pays 0.9:1
- Below “8” – 46.15% chance – pays 1:1
- Above “8” – 46.15% chance – pays 1:1
- 6-10 or 16-25 Mid-range bet – 21% chance – pays 4:1
While going after 120:1 payouts is exciting and CAN be profitable, you’ll need a lot of luck on your side. Stick to these side bets when playing Andar Bahar instead.
Many people assume Andar Bahar and Katti are the same game. That’s not quite true.
You now know that Andar Bahar plays with a single Joker combined with Andar and Bahar draw cards.
Katti is a little different.
Andar Bahar Strategy Guide
Here are the main differences between Katti and Andar Bahar.
- In Katti, players pick a Joker from 13 cards on the table.
- There is an indicator card, which tells you which side (Andar or Bahar) will receive the first draw card.
You’ll still make the same bets as Andar Bahar – on Andar or Bahar.
Here is how you play Katti.
- Thirteen cards are dealt face-up in front of the players.
- A player picks a card.
- You place your bet on the inside or outside position (like when playing Andar Bahar).
- The dealer turns over an indicator card. This card determines the starting position for the first draw card.
- A black card (spade or club) – the draw starts on the side you bet on.
- A red card (diamond or heart) – the draw starts on the opposite side
For example – if you picked the Andar (or inside) bet and a black indicator card comes up, the draw starts on Andar. If, instead, a red indicator card appears, the draw starts on the Bahar (outside) side – giving you a slight disadvantage.
The game is then played like classic Andar Bahar with cards alternating positions back and forth until a card that matches yours appears, determining whether you won or lost based on Andar or Bahar.
Let’s look at an example using Katti game rules.
- The dealer starts by taking the deck of shuffled cards and placing the first 13 face-up on the table.
- You decide to select the third card, which is the queen of clubs.
- You place a bet on the inside (Andar) position.
- The queen of clubs now takes the role of the joker, used in standard Andar Bahar. When another queen appears, the round ends.
- Before the draw for a matching queen begins, the dealer draws the indicator card. We’ll say it’s the jack of hearts. Because it’s a red card, the deal starts on the Bahar side (outside position).
- The draw goes back and forth from Bahar to Andar to Bahar to Andar to Bahar until, finally, a queen of diamonds appears on the Andar side. You won the round.
That’s all there is to the game of Katti.
To summarize, Katti is different from Andar Bahar in the beginning stages – in determining the joker card and in using an indicator card to determine which side gets the first draw card.
From there, Katti plays the same as Andar Bahar.
